Age Group Policies

Each and every season, we receive many questions and requests regarding age division and placements. To clarify things, we follow the US Soccer guidelines for youth soccer programs, which dictate that players are registered and compete by birth years (not school grade or year). For families who have been playing with us for a while, you’ll notice that we have adjusted our league programs accordingly in recent years.

Beginning in fall 2024, we will be applying this policy to our SCSL program. Our Youth Intramural and Pee Wee divisions will continue to operate under the exemption for in-house, intramural-type programs — this allows us to use our discretion when reviewing and accommodating player-specific requests.

While we may allow SCSL players the option of “playing up” an age group (this helps to keep siblings together, for example), we are no longer allowing them — unless very special circumstances exist — to compete in a younger division. This is the same rule/policy our competitive travel program is required to follow.

None of these policies are specific to PVSC, and you will notice that other area clubs operate under the same guidelines.

Determining A Player’s Age Group

To easily determine a player’s appropriate age group, you can simply subtract their birth year from the year in which the current soccer season ends.

For example, for the 2024-2025 season, a player born in 2016 would compete in the U9 age group (2025 – 2016 = 9).

You can also use EPYSA’s official chart for determining a player’s placement.
